Sustainable Agriculture Empowers Women

CPAR’s Green Schools Network projects have introduced permaculture training in many schools and communities in Malawi, equipping participants with practical skills and knowledge related to sustainable agriculture.

Meet Alice Chamadenga. This 50-year-old woman from Mkoloweko Village in Lilongwe is using the knowledge she gained about permaculture practices to transform her family life by growing her own vegetables to reduce household expenses and earning additional income as sells her produce at local markets.

"Before, I used to go to the market daily to buy vegetables for my household. But this is not the case anymore. Now, I use vegetables from my backyard garden that I established after learning and adopting the permaculture concepts that the Green Schools Network is using at Kaphulika Primary School."

She also appreciates the additional feeling of independence. "Now I don't have to trouble my husband to give me money to buy vegetables. Instead, I bring money to the family after selling some of the vegetables from my garden," Alice proudly shares.
