How can sustainable agriculture empower communities and transform livelihoods?

Updated: May 20

Meet Alice Chamadenga, a 50-year-old woman from Mkoloweko Village in Lilongwe, Malawi. Thanks to CPAR's Green Schools Network Project, Alice has transformed her life through permaculture. She now grows her own vegetables, saving money and even earning extra income by selling her produce.

"In the past few months, I used to go to the market daily to buy vegetables for home consumption. But now this is not the case anymore. I no longer go to the market to buy vegetables; rather, I take vegetables from my backyard garden which I established after learning and adopting the permaculture concept at Kaphulika Primary School."

"I don't trouble my husband to give me money to buy vegetables. Instead, I bring money to the family after selling some of my vegetables harvested from my backyard garden," Alice proudly shares.

This is the power of sustainable agriculture and community empowerment!
