Career readiness for adolescents in Addis Ababa
Empowering youth includes preparing them to fulfill their potential
ISSUE:
Adolescents in Ethiopia's capital suffer similar challenges to their rural counterparts - more so when they themselves are displaced persons due to civil unrest or have a disability or a parent with a disability.

ACTION:
Working with partner Ethiopian Airlines and funded by Transport Canada, we will commemorate the anniversary of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 tragedy on March 10 each year with an educational program. Speakers, including public figures and professionals, from a range of sectors, and Ethiopian Airlines staff. A small portion of the larger Project 302, this annual commemoration is part of overall efforts to improve outcomes for thousands of adolescents in 11 secondary schools who will also benefit from peer mentoring and social and psychological support.

Improving the lives of small scale farmers
Food security and nutrition starts from a seed
PROBLEM:
In Benishangul-Gumuz area of northern Ethiopia, over 86% of the population experiences food shortages. Malnutrition is pervasive among mothers and their children and almost half of the children under the age of five were stunted from acute malnutrition. To improve nutrition and economic health, CPAR worked to boost the economic situation for local area farmers.

ACTION:
Boost agricultural production by scaling up community-based seed multiplication activities: Community-based seed multiplication initiatives allow farmers to buy high quality seeds for reasonable prices. Improved seeds lead to increased crop yields and new food crops being introduced at the community and household level, thereby improving food security, nutrition and household incomes.

Boost household incomes via value chains and market interventions: This project will address issues of poor market infrastructure in the region by organizing small-scale farmers into marketing cooperatives and unions and linking farmers to diversified market opportunities. Farmers will also have access to credit via the establishment of village level savings and loans cooperatives

RESULTS:
Helped seed multiplier groups transform 2,103kg seeds into 49,200 kg. Supported the certification of nearly 70% of seeds produced by CPAR’s seed multiplier groups. This has increased the value of their seeds by up to 20% in the market. Supported the organization of 3 marketing cooperatives, which have reported over 3,000 USD in profits.
