Why we're collaborating with CPAR Uganda

This project is being carried out in collaboration with CPAR Uganda Ltd., at the Dr. Paul Hargrave Memorial Centre.

CPAR received a legacy gift that was set aside specifically to support CPAR Uganda’s Dr. Paul Hargrave Memorial Centre in Lira City. To ensure the funds are used as intended, we are collaborating with CPAR Uganda, who know the community best and are best placed to carry out the activities on the ground.

Ultimate Goal & Vision

Empowered and self-reliant women and men in Greater Northern Uganda actively contributing to inclusive, sustainable community development.

Project Description

Many individuals lack the practical knowledge, market-relevant skills, and confidence needed to engage meaningfully in economic activities. Compounding this is the internalization of a poverty mindset, which limits self-belief, initiative, and long-term planning. Together, these factors hinder individuals from pursuing opportunities for self-reliance and economic advancement.

When disadvantaged individuals are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to become proactive agents of change, they are more likely to engage productively in Uganda’s labour market.

Inside the Information Technology Laboratory

As their participation increases, so does their ability to earn sustainable incomes, enabling them to meet their households’ essential needs. In turn, it is anticipated that these empowered individuals will voluntarily share their knowledge and experiences with others in their communities. This peer-to-peer exchange will foster a ripple effect, promoting similar mindset shifts and enabling more community members to embrace self-reliant, participatory development.

Project Activities

  • Capacity-Building Trainings

    • Self-Reliant Participatory Development (SRPD) Training: Four courses will train 100 community change agents (25 per course) on poverty, financial management, income generation, and social capital. Gender issues will be covered in all four courses as a cross-cutting issue. Each course includes two weeks of classroom instruction and one week of fieldwork.

    • Media for Development Training: Two intensive, hands-on courses will train 50 participants (25 per course) in critical thinking, storytelling, photography, digital media, branding, and journalism over three months.

    • Research Training: Two one-month courses will train 30 participants (15 per course) in research design, data collection, analysis, academic writing, and policy advocacy.

  • Graduation & Public Recognition

    • During the last month of the project, a high-profile joint graduation ceremony will be held for all 180 trainees, with dignitaries and international guests invited to celebrate and network. The event will be live-streamed for broader visibility.

  • Centre Development

    • Revitalization of Dr. Paul Hargrave Memorial Centre: The Centre will be upgraded and operationalized as a hub for training, media production, and research innovation, serving as a long-term resource for community development in Greater Northern Uganda.

Anticipated Outcomes

  • Increased practice of self-reliance through adoption of saving, investment, and income-generating practices.

  • Greater participation of women and men in leadership and community decision-making processes.

  • Strengthened community cohesion and social capital to drive collective development efforts.

  • Increased advocacy for rights, child protection, public health, and gender equity at the community level.
