Summer Early Exposure: Tanzania
Since 2014, CPAR has provided medical students who have completed their second year of med school with an opportunity to obtain international clinical exposure experience. Medical students travel to rural Tanzania to gain up to six weeks of clinical exposure and practical field experience, which includes shadowing doctors in local hospitals to learn more about tropical medicine and providing medical care in low resource settings. Their exposure is split between time spent in hospitals in a traditional elective/rotation format and working with CPAR on programs aimed at educating community members on the improvement of their own health outcomes.
CPAR’s approach to building healthy communities is rooted in a philosophy that views everything as being connected. In Bunda, CPAR’s programs focus on natural resource management, food security and nutrition, and Mother, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) projects. The MNCH projects seek to reduce maternal, infant and child morbidity and mortality rates by strengthening the formal and informal continuum of care for mothers, newborns and children at the community level. Specifically, this project will provide formal and informal training to build the capacity of Traditional Birth Attendants, Community Health Workers and local dispensary health professionals. In addition to exposure to the MNCH project, students will be introduced to a variety of clinical and health related interventions focusing on the management of sexually transmitted infections, malaria and waterborne illnesses. Formal critical reflection exercises before departure are mandatory.
