Brief Overview: |
| Located in East Africa just west of Kenya, Uganda is home to approximately 25 million people. For the past 16 years, communities in Northern Uganda have been devastated by the armed conflict between the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan People's Defense Force (UPDF). One of the deadliest weapons used throughout this conflict are landmines. Tragically, civilians are forced to deal with the greatest impact of landmines - especially women and children. Hidden along village paths, in gardens and fields, landmines can devastate entire communities - leaving them in fear of carrying out everyday tasks such as collecting water, firewood, planting crops or walking to school. |

Consider these facts: |
Almost 80 per cent of those killed or injured by landmines are women and children, and only 10 per cent are soldiers. * |
Around the world, approximately three people are killed or injured every hour by a landmine. * |
It costs only $3 - $30 to purchase and place a landmine, but up to $1000 to remove it. * |
In Africa, landmines kill, injure and disable over 12,000 people per year. * |
