![]() CHV 20: CivicsThe HIV&AIDS Pandemic in Africa and Canadian NGOsThrough the three parts of this unit, students will learn about the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa and explore the ways in which Canadian NGOs are making a difference in rural communities affected by AIDS. Students will be expected to apply information learned to a case study and to design their own NGO project for an assessment assignment. UNIT AND LESSON PLANS CHT 30: 20th Century History – Global and RegionalThe Millennium Development Goals & Canada’s ResponseThrough this three lesson unit, students will learn about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), current development challenges and the Canadian response. Students will also learn about the Canadian foreign policy as related to the MDGs, the role of Canadian NGOs (using CPAR as an example) and will evaluate the progress towards meeting MDGs through case studies from East Africa. UNIT AND LESSON PLANS CGW 4U: Canadian and World IssuesFood Insecurity In Africa: Causes, Effects and SolutionsThrough this three-lesson unit, students will learn about the complex issue of food security and the factors affecting household food security in the developing world, with a geographic emphasis on Eastern Africa. Students will also consider the ways in which non-governmental NGOs can contribute to sustainable development and will be expected to apply their learning to evaluate a case study and designing their own food security project. UNIT AND LESSON PLANS CPW 4U: Canadian and World PoliticsThe Millennium Development Goals & New International Priorities for CanadaThrough this three-lesson unit, students will learn about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), current development challenges and the Canadian response. Students will learn about Canadian foreign policy, the role of Canadian NGOs and will evaluate the progress towards meeting MDGs through case studies from East Africa. Students will be required to evaluate Canada’s current Foreign Policy Statement as it relates to the MDGs. UNIT AND LESSON PLANS HFA 4M: Food and Nutrition ScienceFood Insecurity: the East African ExperienceThrough this three-lesson unit, students will learn about the complex issue of food security and the factors affecting household food security in the developing world, with a geographic emphasis on Eastern Africa. Students will be expected to apply their learning to a case study as well as to write a media response focussed on the challenges associated with encouraging sustainable food security. UNIT AND LESSON PLANS HHS 4M: Individuals and Families in a Diverse SocietyThe HIV Pandemic and Implications for the African FamilyThrough the two lessons of this unit, students will learn about the HIV&AIDS pandemic in Africa and explore the ways that the spread of the disease in African communities is affecting family patterns and economic development. Students will also consider the variety of interventions needed to curb the negative affects of HIV&AIDS and will be expected to apply information learned to a case study.
