 |
Ethiopia is located in the Eastern Horn of Africa just west of Somalia. The country is unique amongst other African countries because it is the only country on the continent that maintained its freedom from colonial rule. The country is known for its rugged mountains, deep river valleys and wide rivers such as the Blue Nile.
Over the years, Ethiopia's communities have been challenged by drought, famine and civil war and is currently facing many issues including food insecurity, a high HIV/AIDS infection rate, deforestation and desertification. |

Bringing Safe Water to Ethiopia's Remote Communities - Ethiopia

Since CPAR was founded in response to the famine experienced in Ethiopia in 1984 - our work in that country has remained focused on its most vulnerable communities. In 1999, CPAR started a project with funding from WaterCan to address the lack of safe water and adequate sanitation in one of its most remote regions - Benishangul-Gumuz.

As we know, water - clean water is life.
This project changed lives and resulted in improved water points developed (deep wells, springs, shallow wells, and school-based water pumps) and pit latrines constructed for a huge percentage of the remote communities in Dibate Woreda. By addressing this immediate health concern (especially for children under-5 years of age, who suffered disproportionately from water borne diseases such as diarrheoa communities were better positioned to tackle many of the more long-term challenges they faced.

CPAR has been active in Ethiopia since 1985, initially responding to the emergency famine relief efforts. Overtime, CPAR's programming has evolved to include long-term solutions to tackle food insecurity as well as community health and development.

Moving Beyond Hunger - Empowering Farming Families in Ethiopia
CPAR's Program Officer, Todd Carmichael captured brief video footage from within the remote community in Haro Michael Kebele Administration (a Kebele Administration is the smallest level of local political organization, similar to a town in Canada), of a remarkably successful community garden that has been organized and supported through the Moving Beyond Hunger program.
Through the program, CPAR is assisting these farmers in making better use of a natural spring and providing technical and material support to improve cultivation practices. CPAR has also empowered 128 families to produce consistent amounts and types of food crops.
Families in this area have reported having enough food to eat during the year and have also been able to sell excess crops to earn an income that can be directed towards other needs. Introducing the utilization of irrigation to this community has helped empower families with the tools they need to change their immediate and long-term health.
