Regina Aloyce... How Farmer Field Schools Changed Her Life
When Regina Aloyce first joined the Jikomboe Farmer Field School her crop production was very low. Regina was averaging six bags of maize per acre and two bags of pigeon peas per acre – and she was struggling to come up with the necessary funds to buy school uniforms and exercise books for her four primary school aged children.

After learning improved farming methods in her FFS group – proper spacing of crops, use of cover crops to maintain moisture in the soil, access to improved seeds and proper timing of planting – Regina managed to triple her maize production and double her pigeon pea production.

She planted papaya trees and started a vegetable garden.  With income-generation support, Regina started chicken, goat and pig husbandry.  Farming training, household budgeting and improved storage facilities further improved her ability to achieve year round food security.
“Now we have enough nutritious food to eat and can meet our other household requirements like buying school supplies for our three children in primary school and supporting our two oldest children in secondary school. My husband and I also plan to build a modern house.”
